PHILADELPHIA -- "Michael Vick is headed to the interview room," an Eagles official announced late Thursday night in the home team's locker room at Lincoln Financial Field as we in the media scurried about querying this player and that one about the much-ballyhooed return of quarterback-turned-convict all of us had just witnessed. So we hustled to the locker room door leading to the interview room and waited for the subject of our new desire, and continued criticism, to speak. Turned out, he was even more impressive confronted by us than he had been earlier in the evening confronted for the first time in two football seasons by rampaging defensive linemen and linebackers. That was quite a feat because Vick, the vanquished Falcons' quarterback, was just about perfect -- 4-for-4 passing with one run for one yard that should've been for none or worse -- playing a few plays in the sport he had foolishly removed himself from with criminal activity two years ago.

But what Vick did after the game, in which his new team beat the Jaguars, was more important than what he did in it. And what he did before the game was more important too, making an appearance in a Newport News, Va., bankruptcy court where he let a judge know that he fully understood his responsibilities to his creditors.
That's what it is all about for Michael Vick this year. It isn't about football. It is about what he does before and after his games. After all, it wasn't poor decision-making on the field that chased him from the game; it was poor decision-making off of it.
He spoke with the humility you would expect of a young man who wasted so much so quickly. He was respectful of every question fired his way. He was a sympathetic figure.
"I just want to help this football team win, whatever I have to do" Vick said when asked what he hoped his role would be when the regular season started. "I just want to be able to make plays, to be able to say I contributed and that I helped this football team reach that one common goal. That is winning at the end of the day and hopefully wining a championship.
"I am humbled," he said, sporting a long sleeve collared shirt that was as white, as angelic white, as it could be. It draped over his dark jeans that tumbled into a pair of high top Nike basketball shoes that were as heavenly white as his shirt.
There will undoubtedly be those among us who root against Michael Vick for the rest of his life because of what he was convicted and sentenced to prison for doing, torturing dogs to death in an intrastate dogfighting operation he bankrolled and helped oversee. A handful of them turned up outside of Philly's stadium hours before kickoff. Three women carried a handmade sign denouncing Vick as a murderer. Another woman carried a T-shirt she unfurled when asked that called Vick her "dog." That was it.
It was refreshing to see in a city like Philadelphia that threatened to be so unwelcoming to Vick, and has an infamous history of nastiness, that it could turn the other cheek and give him a chance at redemption. The Eagles fans in Lincoln Field, a smattering of whom even sported Vick jerseys that at least one local sports store said it wouldn't sell, even greeted Vick's entry to the game on the second Eagles snap with a cheer.
"We were all wondering how the fans were going to react, and when they started cheering we were going nuts," another backup Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb said. "We all feel for him and we want the best for him, and obviously [Thursday] was a good start in that direction."
Vick has had one stumble in his return to the public's eye. He was caught enjoying a cocktail at a watering hole. He quickly learned from his new mentor, former NFL coach Tony Dungy, that wasn't the thing to do.What is the thing to do is what he did for the Humane Society the other day, appearing in a promotional video for the animal welfare group talking about the need to care for pets. What is the thing to do is continue to show as he did Thursday night his contrition and remorse and thankfulness for the second chance he's received.
"I never envisioned myself coming out in a Philadelphia Eagles uniform," he said of his daydreaming in prison. "It was kind of a surreal feeling when I was coming out of the locker room and I see all these big guys in front of me and I see the Philadelphia Eagles symbol on the helmet and the green and the white. I had to kind of pinch myself to remind myself that it was real.
"It was something that I've been waiting for a long time and to actually suit up and get ready to go out and play a game, regardless of if it's the preseason or the regular season, it's been a long journey for me and I just want to do it right this time around and make the most of my situation."
Michael Vick is off to a proper start.

And you are a piece of garbage for calling him one. Get over it....focus on the something that's worthwhile focusing on. It's so amazing to me how narrow minded a lot of you think. What about the hockey player in Atlanta that was driving drunk, crashed into a pole and killed his friend???? Why I didn't hear all the backlash from that??? Especially since he didn't serve any time and he was allowed to play hockey again. Didn't see PETA march for that, matter of fact I didn't even hear about MADD folks protesting it. So don't get so ignorant and self righteous about some pit bulls....he did it, served his time and now he's moved on and I suggest you and all those other ignorant folks do the same, because we all live in glass houses. So quit while you are behind before your skeletons are revealed.

Philly is not what it used to be, unless you're in the hood and/or winning the super bowl at any cost. Taking Vick is reacing rock bottom! Must be where he can do his "thing" start up another DOG KILLING KENNEL and be cheered on for drowning, electrocuting, beating to death, breaking necks in a snap and making a small fortune raising little pupppies to kill or be kill. He's cursed and when they find out it won't matter to the Eagle fans. Season is just starting, lets see how tough he is in a one on one AT AWAY GAMES!!!! Any coach who respects his team would not kiss his ugly or give him a pass go card..Ditto on the owner who will pay this Dog Killing crud.

I'm NOT excusing what Vick did; he did the crime and RIGHTFULLY did the time. I'm past it now. I find it interesting that the same activists who deride Vick's treatment of Pit Bulls SOMETIMES want to wish him harm as well!

This is not about what you or I think of Vick. If Vick was not allowed to pursue his trade and make the very best of what is left of his life, he may as well have stayed in prison. Denying him the right to re-start his career would probably have led him BACK to an illigitimate lifestyle, then you could all talk about what a loser he is. A VERY close family member of mine did time in prison, and upon release he just gave up on himself. His release was more than 15 years ago, and he has not held a job or assimilated back into society since. He has yet to contribute and has lived off handouts and public aid. He is a broken recluse of a man, and the hearts of the family are broken for him. I KNOW it's not easy for Vick to deal with all the scrutiny, but given all options, he is making the best of a dificult situation. Shouldn't we teach our children to rise in the face of failure, never give up, learn from thier mistakes and use that knowledge to better yourself? Yet we condemn Vick for doing just that. I promise you, if he were your father, son or brother you would be his biggest cheerleader on gameday. I think some of you need an envy check. He makes the kind of money you'll never see. Wouldn't this world be a better place if ALL convicts got out and led productive lives? I wish my family member had been able to pull himself up in some way. Do it for yourself and those who invest in you, Michael. Screw the critics--they didn't even visit you in the pen.

I've never been a Micheal Vick fan but some of you ignorant assholes have made me become one. I will have to side with KEVIN on this one. So far Micheal has left his past behind him, as well he should, and now is making amends for what he did. Most of the people who are incarcerated that are released never make anything of themselves and society, that is WE, end up supporting them for the rest of their lives anyway. The purpose of sending one to prison is not only for punishment but also for rehabilitation into a productive member of society, which so far, is what Micheal Vick has done. He is making the best of his second chance. Some of you may never have been in prison but have had more chances than Micheal and still have not made anything of yourselves. So as for me (who probably deserves to be called a bigot}, I say "GO Micheal and best of luck", prove your detractors wrong.

I totally agree! I have never been a fan of this guy either but I now find myself pulling for him and the Eagles (a team that I have always despised) to do well. I applaud that organization for giving him a chance to prove that he has changed despite the outrage of people. If we are going to judge everybody that screws up and not give them an opportunity for redemption, then let's just execute them. And while we're at it, let's execute all of you...unless of course you're perfect. I would just love to see the "dirty laundry" of these self-righetous critics.......

Your jealousy is obivious! Everyone with a beating heart knows that Mr. Vick is being made an example of. Turn your hatred towards yourselves, bush, cheney, palin, rashrush, etc. That's where the real problems are.

I mean its laughable to think of some of these activist positions on this issue.
Whatever happened to second chances? The guy F-ed up huge, but he didn't kill anyone, he wasn't dealing drugs to kids, and he wasn't out scamming people out of billions of dollars.
he deserves another chance, just like any of the rest of us do when we screw up.

F you steve...I would give him a second chance had he harmed a human(who probably would have deserved it). Why do you d-bags think it's okay because it was an animal? If someone has the audacity to harm an innocent creature then more than likely they are capable of harming another human being. This scum bag deserves to burn in hell. And for the NAACP...quit playing the F'n race card. Everyone is getting tired of your antics.

Vick did the crime and he did the time. He deserves a second chance. As far as I'm concerned he doesn't have to prove or redeem himself to anyone but himself. There's nothing sincere about he lip service he's forced to give. Vick is scum, probably always will be and running around a field carrying a football doesn't change character or integrity. It would be great if I'm proved wrong, but somehow I don't think so. For now, I consider him a pathetic excuse for a human being, no matter how many times he flops around on that astroturf clutching a football. It's gonna take a lot more than that and "that" is between him and his maker.

Mr. "Black"stone,
Please cease making this reprehensible individual into a saint.
The white shirt notwithstanding, he did not make poor decisions, he made decisions that revealed an uncaring, evil character dwells within him in his awful treatment of dogs.
He was miscast as a team leader in Atlanta with his pot filled waterbottle and his giving the finger to the Atlanta fans.
These character flaws showed up long before his crimes versus animals were uncovered.
Don't forget he lied like a cheap rug whan confronted by the Atlanta owner who had given him millions a short time before the scandal broke.
He should be banned for life from the National Football League which is becoming the National Felon's League.

So far so good for Vick and I hope it continues. He is surrounded by people who want him to succeed, Tony Dungy, etc. and as long as he keeps those people close, he'll probably be ok. Fast forward....things don't go well in football, he's cut, no other team picks him up, the money train has left the station and now he must adjust to life after football, fame and money. Unfortunately for him, Vick must finally be an adult, act like an adult and be responsible. Key question is can he or does he revert to the culture he knows best? We'll see.
